By RANDOLPH E. SCHMID AP Science Writer

WASHINGTON (AP) — Five young lives have been ended by lightning in less than
a week, a deadly reminder of one of summer's leading hazards.
"Typically, July marks the peak in lightning activity. It's also the time when
people are vacationing, so they are outside and they are vulnerable to
lightning," said John Jensenius, a lightning safety expert at the National
Weather Service.

Marco Island resident participates in Civil Air Patrol’s National Glider Flight Academy

Marco Island, FL – C2/Lt Cadet Deryck Kuper of the Marco Island Composite Squadron recently participated in the Civil Air Patrol’s National Glider Flight Academy held in Matoon, Ill. on June 20 through June 28th.

The flight academy is designed for cadets like Kuper who are taking their first steps toward becoming a pilot. The academy gives them formal ground instruction and cockpit time with a certified flight instructor. Many cadets participating in a NFA also solo at the academy. The learning environment is specially designed for cadets, and the low instructor-to-student ratio provides opportunities for mentoring and individual attention....CLICK HERE to read the rest of the release

There has been some confusion on procedures and responsibilities of crew members when it comes to the Marco Squadron monthly Flight Schedule that need clarification:
  1. Ron Stearns requests aircrew members to give him inputs for the next months schedule. Weather you get this request or not you are responsible for providing the dates you can or can not fly do to your personal schedule and plans. It is extremely important that you get this information to Ron by email, phone, in meetings or whatever means possible.
  2. Ron Stearns uses the information on your availability which you provide to fill out the flight schedule. He takes all available pilots, Observers, and Radio Operators and spreads them as evenly as possible over the month in accordance with the information you have given him.
  3. If Ron is not available for a particular month, I fill in for him and do the schedule. I did the May 2008 schedule for instance since Ron was out of town.
  4. Ron sends it to me for approval and I send it out to all Marco Squadron Members 2 to 7 days before the start of the scheduled month.
  5. Your responsibility is to review the schedule when you get it for all your assigned flights. If there are days you are scheduled but can not make, it is your responsibility to find a replacement and to notify others assigned on that flight of the change. This is not in any way the responsibility of anyone but the member with the problem.
  6. If you do not receive a schedule for some reason by the first of the month it is your responsibility to call someone and get it so you can review your flights and find replacements if needed
  7. Mission Pilots are responsible for scheduling all flights you are scheduled for at the beginning of the month in Flight Schedule Pro.
  8. Mission Pilots are also responsible for entering all flights in WMIRS and to close out each flight with the actual times and fuel cost in WMIRS.
  9. Mission Pilots are responsible for obtaining the flight release from a designated FRO for all flights
  10. The crew should communicate with each other at lease 24 hours before the day of the scheduled flight. This includes Mission Pilot, Observer, Radio, and Scanner (If one volunteers to fly the flight). This is not the responsibility of any individual crew members but that of all just to coordinate.
  11. Coastal Patrols are meant to be flown in late afternoon to early evening in daylight. However, the time to meet at the Hangar is the choice of the crew and is at your convenience.
In addition to these procedures:
  1. The flight schedule is for the Coastal Patrol which also serves as a training and proficiency tool for Mission Pilots and Visual search missions. The Mission Pilot will provide the FRO when he calls for the flight release with the profile he will be using as published in CAPR 60-1.
  2. Open days or extra time on the flight schedule are not for extra flights as desired by members.
  3. The squadron will cover the cost of all flights listed on the flight schedule and Form 5/91 check rides and training as designated by the Air Crew Training officer, Dave Walsh only.
  4. Any other flights as desired by members will be conducted at the cost to the member at the wet rate of $100/hr. Checks can be made payable to the Marco Squadron.
Please let me know if you have any questions on this.

Thanks for your cooperation.

Marco Squadron:
Today I am placing 4 Gallon jugs of Clearview by the aircraft supply locker. Remember, it is good for the metal surfaces as well as the windshield. The most economical way to use it is to wet the rag and apply rather than "spritzing " the air around the leading edges. Also, 3 boxes of Exxon Elite oil will be available for our daily use as well as the 50 hr oil change.
I'll put a new Airworthiness Status Report on the cover of the Aircraft Log.
Fly Good!
